How to Get a Mental Health Care Plan in Australia

Accessing mental health support can feel overwhelming, but the Medicare-rebated Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)makes psychological services more affordable. This step-by-step guide explains how to obtain one and what to expect.

What Is a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a referral from your GP that provides Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year with a registered psychologist. The rebate for a session with a clinical psychologist is currently $141.85 per session (as of July 2024).

Step-by-Step Process to Get a Mental Health Care Plan

1️⃣ Book an Appointment with Your GP

  • Schedule a long consultation with your GP so they have time to assess your mental health needs.

  • If you already see a psychiatrist or pediatrician, they can also refer you.

2️⃣ Discuss Your Mental Health Concerns

  • Your GP will ask about your symptoms, history, and how your mental health is affecting your daily life.

  • They may use a brief questionnaire (e.g., K10) to assess your current well-being.

3️⃣ Receive Your Mental Health Care Plan

  • If eligible, your GP will prepare a Mental Health Care Plan outlining your mental health goals and recommended treatment.

  • You will receive a referral for up to 6 sessions with a psychologist.

4️⃣ Book Your Psychology Sessions

  • You can now schedule your sessions with Dr. Azhani. Please email your MHCP and referral letter to our Practice Manager, Brent, so we can streamline rebates.

  • At your first session, bring a copy of your referral letter and MHCP for processing.

5️⃣ Review After 6 Sessions

  • After completing 6 sessions, you must return to your GP for a re-referral. They can approve an additional 4 sessions, bringing your total to 10 per year.

Important Things to Know

✅ If you already have an MHCP with a different provider, you do not need a new one. However, the sessions you have already used will still count, and your remaining sessions will carry over.
✅ The MHCP resets every calendar year, meaning you can access a new plan each year if needed. However, the sessions you have already used will still count, and your remaining sessions will carry over.
✅ Medicare does not cover the full session fee, but the rebate reduces your out-of-pocket cost.
✅ You can choose any psychologist who accepts Medicare referrals, including those in private practice.
✅ Not all psychologists are bulk-billing, so check session fees beforehand.
✅ Your MHCP can be used for Telehealth sessions if you are interstate, but it cannot be used while overseas or if you are admitted to a public hospital.

Seeking support is a big step, and the MHCP makes therapy more accessible. If you're considering psychological support, speak with your GP to start the process today.
